There are many ways in which technology can help students learn. As is often the case, along with the good there are things that can pose areas of concern. Jackson Public Schools wants all its parents, teachers, and students to be aware of the risks involved and how to avoid them.

Parents are always encouraged to be aware of what their children are doing. For those who need a little assistance with understanding the terminology used, Common Sense Education has a wonderful digital glossary of terms used by students. In addition, they include information on several apps that are popular with students. Having an understanding of the terms being used is a great starting place for any conversation. However, you must always keep in mind that pop culture changes quickly, and with it so do terms and popular apps.

In many communities, cyberbullying and other irresponsible online behaviors are commonplace. In an effort to help children be more responsible, Google provides an app and other resources as a part of its "Be Internet Awesome" campaign. Take a look at the app and encourage your students to play the games so that they can be better able to navigate in cyberspace.
